Physical description
The kirefu are a race of dragon, a very rare and mythical species indeed. They are elusive even on Avelle, living in the lushest and most obscure meadow. To live here and to harbour their secretive ways, they have the sorts of traits that enable their lifestyle.
Kirefu are long in body and head, and to see one, one would likely compare them to a reptile, deer and bird. They are an ancient animal, after all, and this is reflected in their appearance.
These dragons are the shortest of the three intelligent Avellian races. They have scaly, birdlike legs and talons, with extremely dextrous claws like a parrot's; capable of grasping, climbing and tearing. They have long tails which are used for balance when climbing, and two narrow, smooth horns on top of their skull. Kirefu ears are rather like a cow's, and they have nostrils from which to smell and breathe. Just above their mouths grow several very long whiskers. These are used to sense and interpret depth.
A kirefu (aside from their legs) is perplexingly covered in feathers. These are long and smooth, so that overall the animal appears very sleek. There are shorter feathers on the face, and much longer feathers encircling the neck. These long neck feathers can be raised, in a 'frill' for use to intimidate potential enemies.
An older kirefu often loses many of its feathers, and the very elderly are often nicknamed "scalies" because of this, as underneath the feathers is very rough, dry skin.
A kirefu chick is born covered in very soft down, like a baby bird. They are also hatched hornless and whiskerless, these grow in once the animal grows older. As they approach adolescance, the chick will moult its down and grow the longer feathers of the adult kirefu.
